Here is my Hot take, Jane is too good for Rochester. Anybody who has read the novel with a more mature version of love will agree I think. Rochester has many issues like the lack of respect for jane, Manipulating her, playing with anothers woman’s feelings (yes Ingram was after money but still not very gentleman of him) and in general has disregard for women in his life like Jane, Bertha (she might be mad but the way he reffers to her as “being” like she is less human than him), Ingram, Adele and Mrs. Fairfax. He is dishonest with Jane (never tells her about Bertha even though he knows how much she values honesty). He threatens Jane when she wants to leave (Noted he doesnt actually hurt her). He is arrogant and although thoes are all traits of a Byronic hero, they are not admirable. Now for the one thing I cant stand, he is in a relationship with an 18 year old (who has’nt seen anything of the world) as 39 year old man (who has travelled much of the world and been in relationship with multiple women). He obviousley gets the better end of the bargain. The novel is written beautifully and I love it’s Byronic/Victorian themes but we must undertand the problematic character of Mr.Rochester.
Please Note that this is my opinion and disagreeing to it is more than ok. Let me know what You think and I am quite open to changing my prespective.
Thank you for reading
